However, a new special tool with an extraordinary geometry remedies this matter. The flute of this milling cutter has a left-hand twist instead of a right-hand twist and presses the workpiece downwards. This enables a more gentle treatment of the workpiece. vhf has now extended its range of tools by an appropriate type with left-hand twist. This tool does not carry away the chips to the top, as usuallly, but presses them down into the milled slot. The advantage of the left-hand twist is that the workpiece will be pressed down, too, and not be pulled up - as with a corkscrew. Especially when one wants to mill workpieces which are fixed with low holding force, the risk that the workpiece may loosen is considerably reduced. Furthermore, when working on materials which tend to fray (for example wood), the cutting edges will become much smoother. However, the removal rate per work step should be reduced a little bit for a tool with left-hand twist. The single tooth cutters with left-hand twist are available as well as universal type "Varius" for plastics, wood and non-ferrous metal as with a polished flute for working on acrylic. In spite of its left-hand twist, the tool is right-cutting, so it can be used in every common spindle with clockwise rotation. The tools are available in 27 different geometries with shank diameters from 3 to 12 mm and cutting edge diameters from 1 to 12 mm. They can be ordered online under www.carbide-tools.com.
